Capturing Unforgettable Moments: Tips for Exceptional Photoshoots

Pro tips for loving your family and branding photos

Being photogenic is a learned skill

I recently received branding and family photos. To say I'm obsessed would be an understatement. I didn’t always feel confident in front of a camera, so here’s some pro tips to love your photos every time!

Choosing Your Photographer Wisely

The cornerstone of an impressive photoshoot is selecting a photographer whose company you genuinely enjoy and with whom you feel at ease. This decision might not follow conventional strategic advice, but it is crucial. When you are comfortable and confident, it naturally reflects in your photos, giving them an authentic and engaging allure. For those residing in the Bay Area, you’re in luck! I have a list of remarkable photographers I'd happily recommend. My two favorites are Jen Vazquez Photography (she also offers video!) and Jenni Chapman Photography.

Prepare for a Relaxed Photoshoot Day

This tip might not be feasible for everyone, but it’s worth considering. Aim to have as little as possible planned on the day of your shoot. A relaxed and unhurried schedule contributes significantly to a stress-free mind and a more enjoyable photoshoot experience.

PRO TIP: If you have young kids who are calm during haircuts, schedule one for them right before the photoshoot. Often children are better behaved for someone else, and you know their hair will look good. Be sure to tell the stylist so they don’t cut too short with the goal of going longer between cuts.

Additionally, if there is one person in the family who takes longer to get ready with makeup and hair, the other person can take the kid(s) to their haircut(s) while the first gets ready at home or with a professional.

PRO TIP: Consider naps and meals, for all ages. When are you and everyone in your photos in the best mood? And don’t forget to bring snacks with you! Yes, for the adults as well. Photoshoots can be surprisingly tiring and it will show in your face. Be sure to take care of yourself to avoid fatigue.

I am always impressed with how much and what a photographer captures. From my perspective, our kiddo’s face wouldn’t be showing in any photos as she was hunting for sticks most of the session.

Wardrobe Planning

Avoid the stress and last-minute frenzy associated with choosing outfits by planning ahead. There is nothing more disconcerting than approaching your photoshoot week with no clear idea of what to wear. Trust me, I’ve been there, and it is a situation best avoided for your peace of mind and better-quality photos.

Personally, I like to start planning at least a month in advance by going through our closets and bulk ordering options. Sometimes I’ll also make a Pinterest board or Canva collage to visually plan prior to ordering.

Embrace Movement

During the shoot, move your body. You don’t need to strike exaggerated poses; simple, fluid movements often yield the best results. Being comfortable with your photographer plays a significant role here, allowing you to move freely and express yourself without reservations. Whether you need music to loosen up or prefer dancing, ensure you are engaged and not static.

If you’re starting to feel stiff or your face is hurting from smiling, take a moment to shake it out. Yes, literally shake your body and give yourself a quick facial massage.

You can also get some photos from the back or side that do not include your face. Often these are some of my favorites as they evoke a very intimate emotion.

Think About Your Branding or Home Aesthetic

Consider the purpose of the photos. For branding shots, contemplate your brand’s colors and overall vibe. If the pictures are family portraits, think about the aesthetic and colors predominant in your home. Thoughtfully planning the background and environment of your photoshoot can result in pictures that seamlessly fit with your brand or home decor.

My personal preference is for backgrounds that are subtle and complementary, allowing the subjects of the photos to be the central focus. I often opt for serene outdoor settings with lots of trees, the ocean, or a predominantly white studio. These backgrounds not only align with my brand's earthy and grounded colors but also resonate with my home’s aesthetic, providing a harmonious visual flow.

Get your makeup and hair done

So often people tell me, “I want to look like myself, so I’ll just do my own makeup and hair.” Which I absolutely understand. However, this often increases stress while preparing for your photoshoot. Instead, find an artist or team who compliments your personal style while also enhancing your appearance for photos. Typically, day to day makeup does not show up in professional photos the way you see yourself in person.

Many of our clients come to us after being disappointment with the result of their photos due to the lack of professional makeup and hair. Additionally, it aids in the relaxation advice I gave previously.

For our family photos, we scheduled ours on a weekday evening, got our makeup done while our daughter was napping at a grandparents’ house, then met her at the salon where my wife and daughter got their hair cut and styled. We ate dinner at the salon and on the way to the beach, then got dressed when we arrived. Everyone was fed, rested, beautiful and happy.

Booking a photoshoot can be an amazing experience when you are well-prepared and have clear expectations. By carefully choosing a photographer you resonate with, planning your day and wardrobe in advance, moving naturally during the shoot, and considering the purpose and aesthetic of your photos, you can confidently anticipate a set of pictures you’ll absolutely adore. Every photoshoot is an opportunity to capture and celebrate unforgettable moments — make the most of it!
